Expatriates have the possibility to work and live in Mauritius by obtaining an Occupation Permit. An occupation permit allows a non-national to reside and work in Mauritius.

An investor, a professional or a self-employed person may be eligible under certain conditions. The dependents of an occupation permit holder may also apply for residence permits. It is also possible to live in Mauritius by obtaining a Residence Permit. This can be done by retiring in Mauritius and/or being the owner of an Integrated Resorts Scheme (“IRS”) or Real Estate Scheme (“RES”). We can assist you on the purchase of villas under the IRS or RES.

Occupation Permits

An occupation permit, both a work and residence permit, allows a foreigner to reside and work in Mauritius. An investor, a professional or a self-employed person may be eligible under the following conditions:

Investor:
The business activity should generate a turnover exceeding MUR 4 million approximately (USD133,333) annually with an initial investment of USD100,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency. If there is more than one investor in the same company applying for an Occupation Permit, the turnover criteria should apply in respect of each applicant (i.e. MUR 8 million (approximately USD266,666) for two applicants, MUR 12 million (approximately USD400,000) for three applicants, and so on)

Professional:
Basic salary should exceed MUR 45,000 monthly (approximately USD1,500).

Self-employed:
Income from the business activity should exceed MUR 600,000 (approximately USD20,000) annually with an initial investment of USD 35,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency. The dependents of an occupation permit holder may also apply for residence permits.

  • Retiring in Mauritius

A residence permit for retired non-citizens allows an eligible person to reside in Mauritius for three years. To be eligible, the retired non-citizen, irrespective of nationality, must be at least 50 years of age and must undertake to transfer to his/her local bank account in Mauritius at least USD 40,000 annually, or its equivalent in any convertible foreign currency so as to meet his/her own living expenses in Mauritius. The applicant must make an initial transfer of US$ 40,000 when first settling in Mauritius.

Permanent Residence Permit
A Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) is a permit that allows an eligible non-citizen to work and/or live in Mauritius for a period of 10 years. It is renewable. The application for this permit is made by Acutus on behalf of the applicant at the “Residence Permit Section” Prime Minister’s Office (Home Affairs Division).

Eligibility for Permanent Residence Permit

The following categories of persons are eligible for Permanent Residence Permit:

1. An investor having held an Occupation Permit for three years immediately preceding the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit and whose company’s turnover exceeded MUR 15 million (approximately USD500,000) every year during each of these three years in respect of each shareholder of the company;

2. A self-employed having held an Occupation Permit for three years immediately preceding the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit and whose income exceeded MUR 3 million (approximately USD100,000) every year during each of these three years;

3. A professional having held an Occupation or a Work Permit for three years immediately preceding the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit, and who has drawn a basic monthly salary of at least MUR 150,000 (USD5,000) during the entire three year period;
4. A retired non-citizen having held a Residence Permit for three years and who has transferred to Mauritius USD 40,000 or its equivalent in convertible currency annually during each of these three years.
